Revised Regulations


The IIA Brihan Mumbai Centre has started the Design Dissertation (IIA BMC-DD) Awards 2022 & 2023 for the Colleges of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), in order to encourage students of the B.Arch. course towards a practical approach in their Design Dissertation.

IIA Brihan Mumbai Centre invites the students of Semester 10 (2021 – 2022) & (2022-2023) to participate in the newly-instated annual IIA Brihan Mumbai Centre Design Dissertation (IIA BMC-DD) Awards 2022 & 2023 by submitting their Design Dissertation projects of Semester 10 of their curriculum, in accordance with the regulations set out below.

General Regulations

1. Eligibility for Participation

  1. The participant will have been a bonafide student at a College of Architecture situated within the MMR, who has appeared for the Final Year B. Arch. Examination at the conclusion of the academic year 2021-2022 & 2022-2023.
  2. Each Design Dissertation project entry must be validated by the Head/ Principal of the College. The name of the College must be enlisted by the Council of Architecture.
  3. Each College can send in upto two entries per student intake of 40.

2. Procedure for Participation

  1. Registration will take place between 20th December 2023 to 25th January 2024 on the following link:

    Students are advised to have the details of payment made [see 2b below] and a scan of the payment receipt BEFORE registering on the google form link.
  2. No registration fee will be charged from those colleges which are affiliated with IIA
    (List of colleges affiliated with IIA as available from: https://indianinstituteofarchitects.com/colleges-institutes-affiliated-with-iia/).
    Participants from all other colleges will be charged a registration fee of ` 500/- + 18% GST (` 590/-) each.

  3. Each registration received for this Awards program shall be assigned a Unique Identification Number (UIN), which shall be intimated to the participant / College by email by 27th January 2024. We will also email you the submission link for uploading your work.
  4. Following the registration and payment, the participant and College Head will be sent the following:
    (i) Declaration Format: to be sent by the student from the same email id which they have registered on the google form. (Please see Format A)
    (ii) Bonafide Letter Format: to be sent by the College Head from the official email / registered email id (Please see Format B)
  5. Link for uploading the submission according to point no. 3 - Online submissions will be accepted from 27th January 2024 to 31st January 2024. Please note that all the files in the online submission will be named according to point no. 3 below, with the UIN no. stated in a bracket for each file. No name, symbol, motto or distinguishing mark (other than the project title and UIN) is to be placed on any part of the submitted work or presentation.
    No submission will be accepted after the deadline.
  6. The participants may send a DVD with all the contents (according to point. No. 3), in case he/ she is not able to upload their work online. It should reach the address given below by 30th January 2024**
    On the envelope, please write clearly your allotted “UIN” and “IIA BMC-DD Awards 2022”. No submission will be accepted after the deadline. c/o Saachi Associates, L-21, M.R. Society,

3. Components of the Online Submission

The following will be:

  • Uploaded to the google form link sent to the participant by 25th January 2024.
  • Or may send in a DVD to the above address.
  1. Passport size photograph of the participant
  2. Synopsis of Dissertation: MS Word file (maxm. 500 words)
  3. Drawing panels: Single PDF (of at least 300 dpi resolution)
  4. AutoCAD / Photoshop / Corel Draw drawings: purged files containing all plans, sections, elevations of the project and design detailing in simple line drawings with line thicknesses (without render) in proper layers and purged files
  5. JPEGS: (of at least 300 dpi resolution) of all rendered drawings - plans, sections, elevations, 3-D views, conceptual drawings, model images and design details. [Maximum 10 nos.]
  6. PowerPoint presentation to show the Jurors in case the project is shortlisted. The PPT should consist of a maximum of 30 slides, including:
  • The cover slide: which should clearly state the title of the project and the UIN
  • Not more than five slides of the background of the dissertation project.

This same PPT will be used by the short-listed participants to present their projects to the Panel of Jurors online (duration: maximum 10 mins.).

Please note: All the files in the online submission will be named according to point no. 3 below, with the UIN no. stated in a bracket for each file.

For example: if allotted UIN no. is “ABC 12345” then the file will be labelled as follows:

(a) Participant photo (ABC 12345)

(b) Synopsis (ABC 12345)

IMPORTANT:

No name, symbol, motto or distinguishing mark will be placed on any part of the submitted work or presentation except the title of the project and the UIN.

4. Disqualification and Disputes

  1. i) The Organizers and / or Panel of Jurors may disqualify entries due to any of the following:
  2. a) If any entry is received after the given date for submission.
  3. b) If the participant fails to adhere to any of the norms set for the Awards Programme
  4. c) If the participant attempts to influence any member from the Organizing Committee or the Panel of Jurors.
  5. d) If any name, symbol, motto or distinguishing mark (other than the project title and UIN) is placed on any part of the submitted work or presentation.
  6. e) If the project is not found to be the original work of the participating student.
  7. ii) In the unlikely of any dispute occurring, the decision of the Chairman of the IIA Brihan Mumbai Centre will be final and binding, without any legal recourse.

5. Procedure of the Awards Programme

The entries received will be judged in the two stages as follows :

Stage 1 : Shortlisting of all entries received

A panel of Jurors will shortlist the Design Dissertation projects from all the entries received. The shortlisted participants will be informed by email.

Stage 2 : Final selection of winning entries

The shortlisted participants will present their work to the Panel of Jurors online.

 (duration: maximum 10 mins.)

The Panel will announce the winners as follows:

  1. First Prize
  2. Second Prize
  3. Third Prize
  4. Five Special Mentions
  5. Guides / Supervisors of the winning entries

The decisions of the Panel of Jurors will be final and binding.

The Jurors will be eminent practicing architects from the MMR.

6. Criteria of Evaluationn

The criteria of assessment by the Panel of Jurors will include various aspects that are concurrent with the practice of architecture. Along with aesthetics, this will include practical efficiency, and applicability to the real world, buildability, viability and functionality, universal accessibility, sustainability.

There will also due weightage given to the aspects of architectural representation and design detailing for the project.

7. Rights of Publication

Copyright of all the participating Design Dissertation projects, including all the winners will remain with the authors. However, IIA Brihan Mumbai Centre will have the right to publish the projects received, as deemed fit, in architecture journals or as a collated publication, for the purpose of records and dissemination.

By 27th January 2024 All participants will be intimated of the allocated UIN and the link for uploading by email.
27th to 31st January 2024 Uploading of submission to the given link, along with the completed Declaration form.
30th January 2024 Last day for receiving DVDs to the given address (in case you have selected this option, please inform at iiabmawards@gmail.com.
19th February 2024 Stage 1: Shortlisting of all entries received

Stage 2: Final selection of winning entries – Presentation by shortlisted participants
